The New Salem Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) selected Christopher Schirding of PORTA HS as their 2006 Scholarship Recipient. Two scholarships were awarded to Chris by the New Salem Longbeards Chapter. One $250 scholarship was awarded in the memory of local chapter member Richard (Joe) Eilks of Oakford, and he was also selected as the 2006 Chapter Scholar with a $250 award.
Scholarship applicants are required to be graduating seniors in the local area with a minimum 3.0 GPA, and they must must pursue a degree at an accredited institution of higher education, actively participate in hunting sports, be involved in school activities, and demonstrate leadership plus community involvement. An essay, autobiography, copy of hunting license, and three letters of recommendation were also required.
